So many things run through my mind when I read the article below... but I love the final quote, she "had gone out to get her drink on!" I wish my grandmother had started me on the bottle that young... I would have been the cool kid come high school at the age of 13 or 14 with the tolerance of a 47 year old.

A Bloomington woman has been charged with child endangerment after giving her 8-year-old granddaughter gin and then leaving her alone, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.
Joanne DeLoach, 47, is being held at the Hennepin County Jail. Bail has been set at $6,000. DeLoach was babysitting her granddaughter Aug. 31 but wanted to celebrate her birthday the same day, Bloomington police Cmdr. Jim Ryan said. The girl's mother was working a 12-hour shift.
The girl told police DeLoach poured her cups of gin and forced her to drink it. When the girl complained about the taste, DeLoach diluted it with water and gave it back to the girl, Ryan said.
Police think DeLoach tried to get her granddaughter drunk enough to pass out so she could leave. During the booking process, DeLoach mentioned that she "had gone out to get her drink on," Ryan said. When the girl's mother returned, she found the child alone. The girl reported that she had vomited and fallen, cutting her forehead, the complaint said.
Ryan said police responded to the apartment about 10 p.m. - nine hours after the girl first began drinking - responding to an anonymous phone call that a child had been given alcohol. DeLoach was not at the apartment when police arrived.
The girl was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. A breath test on the child resulted in a reading of 0.042, half the legal driving limit, the complaint said. On Saturday, police returned to the apartment to check on the girl's welfare. Police found DeLoach at the apartment and arrested her.
During the booking process, DeLoach mentioned that she "had gone out to get her drink on," Ryan said.

Eight is a little young but I had my first drunken encounter with the police on the eve of my 15th birthday. We'd had this huge party while my mom was out of town... a friend of mine passed out in a neighbor's yard and they called the cops... it was about 1 in the a.m. and I was barely conscious when I saw a big round blue thing walk through the front door with a small blurry badge on it's front. Fortunately the just called my dad who lived nearby and he didn't tell my mom -- of course the next week when i got picked up again they called her but that's a different story.
